Will It Thrive?

God shares a parable through the prophet Ezekiel. In the parable, an eagle carries a branch into a new land and plants it in the ground. The branch thrives under the eagle’s care, but another eagle comes, and the branch starts to reach toward it. Ezekiel then asks this question: “Will it thrive?”

We often look at our lives and measure them according to the world’s standards. The world presents power, fame, and riches as the goals to reach, no matter the cost. If we allow ourselves to be confused and think that God’s goals for us are the same as the world’s, we may believe that having money or being popular proves that God favors us.

Satan knows how the human heart works. He looks for every opportunity to tempt us. We also know that Satan tempted Jesus Christ with power, fame, and riches. So, it's not far-fetched to think that when we find ourselves in positions of power, pride, and comfort, we might come to believe that we don't need God or that we can put our relationship with Him on cruise control because we have acquired all these things due to our incredibly good standing with Him. We might assume our “success” will continue, but we are unknowingly moving away from God’s will.

Are we friends with God or with the world? What is the worth of our wealth if it is not used to serve God? If our primary focus is on how our wealth validates our self-worth, or if we are solely trying to satisfy our desires, can we rightfully call our wealth “riches?" Wouldn’t our wealth or power be considered more of a hindrance than a blessing?

On the other hand, without changing anything about our circumstances or status, we can use our wealth and power to love and help others. We should view these blessings as gifts to steward rather than as trophies to display.

Lord, please don't let wealth and worldly success become obstacles for me. Keep my heart steadfast on Your will. Show me how to use the resources You have provided to alleviate poverty and suffering and to bring honor and glory to You. Never allow success to become a poison that distances me from You.
