THE LORD WILL PROVIDE

I can only imagine the questions racing through Abraham's head as he ascended the mountain, in fear and trembling, knowing that he must sacrifice his own son at the top. Would God really ask me to do this? How could God keep His promises to me if I am to give up my own son?

A voice breaks in — “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, "God will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.

Some thirteen-hundred to fourteen-hundred years later, as Jesus ascends the hill to Jerusalem (Mark 10:32-34), the sacrificial lamb will finally be provided. God's own Son. God would do what he would not ask Abraham to: take on the pain and suffering of sacrificing His own Son to bring a light to all the nations.

The Lord is God,
and he has made his light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
up to the horns of the altar!

(Psalm 118:27)

“So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided'" (Genesis 22:14). Through Abraham, we see a taste of the provision of God, which is fulfilled on the Hill of Calvary.

We can rejoice in God's goodness, for He has provided the grace we need through His Son. When we repent and, through faith, respond to God's love, He gives the grace necessary to save us from our sinful ways.
