Discovering the Lord’s PrayerExemplo
Intercession Aligned with God’s Heart
One of the most memorable experiences of intercession I’ve ever had was during a time of intercession for the nation of Guatemala. Our team received the phrase “sounds of deliverance” from Psalm 32:7. We began to play and sing different melodies as we prayed, sounds of deliverance to sing over the nation. At one point, I heard this rumbling noise. I quickly wrote in my journal, “Rumbling sounds in Guatemala?” I didn’t understand what I was hearing. Then, the Lord began to show me territories the enemy had claimed for himself that the people of Guatemala would soon be taking back for the glory of God. The rumbling was the sound of the people running to do so.
At the same time that I began to sing what I saw, our drummer played a low, rumbling sound. He was hearing the same thing as I was! How cool is that? We never could have thought of that ourselves! Together we declared and sang of things to come, agreeing with God’s heart for His people in Guatemala.
When we worship, we continuously agree with God about Who He is. When we intercede, we agree with what He said He would do! The word “intercession” comes from the Greek wordpalal, meaning to intervene, interpose, or mediate. When we intercede, we intervene and stand in the gap on behalf of those in need. Intercession is much simpler than we make it out to be!
When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, our heart is to bridge the gap between heaven and earth. So, how do we intercede? First, learn the facts about the subject or people you plan to hold up to the Lord in prayer. Next, ask the Holy Spirit what He has to say about the topic. As He reveals how He thinks and feels, allow yourself to think and feel the same way. Third, partner with other brothers and sisters in prayer and intercession.
There’s no reason to plead, beg, or say all the right words when interceding. The eloquence or intensity of a prayer do not affect how much God hears our prayers. Speaking God’s Word in agreement with Him moves Him, regardless of our feelings, circumstances, and even our talents. We have been invited to share His desires for His people and to lovingly intercede for those He loves.
