Celebrate Communion – a Time to Honour Jesus

Dia 3 de 5

When we take communion, we use bread and grape juice, but what’s so special about them? We drink juice all the time and have two slices of bread as sandwiches in our lunch boxes. Is a peanut butter sandwich special? And what if we don’t have bread or grape juice? Could we use something else? Would communion with cookies and milk be okay?

Bread and wine would have been a usual part of a Passover meal for Jesus and His disciples. When we take communion, it’s not the bread and the cup that are the most important things, it’s taking time to remember what Jesus did for us that is special.

What do the bread and the cup mean? These two elements are known as emblems, and they make up what is known today as communion. We have a small cup of red juice that reminds us of Jesus’ blood, that He bled for us, overcoming death on the cross. The small cracker or piece of bread reminds us of Jesus’ body which was bruised and broken for us. Jesus took the punishment for sin so that we could be right with God and have eternal life.

We participate in communion, drinking the juice and eating the bread, to remember what Christ did for us. We take time to honour Jesus and celebrate all He has done for us.
