Reading the Bible can feel intimidating sometimes. But one simple way of studying Scripture is called S.O.A.P. It stands for "Scripture," "Observation," "Application," and "Prayer." We'll show you how—it's easy!

S: Scripture

If you haven't already, read today's passage of Scripture. Then, summarize it in your own words.

O: Observation

Read Matthew 20:1–16 again.

  • What stands out to you?
  • What does it teach us about Jesus' teachings on equity?
  • What questions do you still have?

A: Application

  • Who is someone you find difficult to see as deserving of God's favor? What holds you back from wanting to see them receive equity?
  • How can we be people who are okay with this version of equity when it doesn't feel fair?
  • In Matthew 20:16, Jesus said, "The last will be first." Who can you put first today?

P: Prayer

Spend some time in prayer, asking God to show you places of inequity in your community. Ask for guidance in knowing how to be a part of making things right. Then, say thank you that God doesn't treat us with a faulty view of fairness but values equity for those some see as less deserving.
