Jesus Asks for Bold Faith
By Ps Asha
Today we are reading about two of Jesus’ healing miracles in just one passage! These two healing miracles are connected by their need for bold faith.
On one hand, there’s Jairus - a synagogue leader. He understood and had heard about the miracles of Jesus. He had faith in Jesus to heal his daughter physically, but his faith did not reach much further than this. We can see that his faith was limited, and we watch his faith dwindle once he receives news of her death.
On the other hand, we have a woman who is also physically ill, an outcast of society, and ceremonially ‘unclean’ because of her illness.
Her faith went beyond the circumstances. She had nothing left but Jesus, so her faith drove her to do something that was unacceptable within society and unbelievably bold. Her bold faith was what brought her healing and the understanding that Jesus could do anything. Jesus didn’t just heal her He restored her identity and her self-worth. He had changed her life of isolation and illness into a life of freedom and restoration. She had faith in all of that!
These miracles in the Scripture remind me that the miracle I have received in faith is not always just the physical result but also sometimes what God produces in me through that result.
Jairus had faith in a small miracle, but Jesus wanted to produce BOLD faith in him, like the woman who trusted Jesus to heal her despite her circumstances, the delays, and the unlikeliness of the desired outcome.
Don’t let the ‘waiting’ stop you short of a miracle.
Don’t let what seems like a ‘delay’ to your miracle steal your faith.
Be aware of what God is producing in you
Here are some questions we could consider as we read this passage:
What kind of faith do I have? Is it bold, timid, hesitant, hopeful?
What is holding me back in my faith?
What kind of faith is God asking for?
What is God producing in me while I wait for a miracle?
