A Shepherd's Insights: Part II
Kathy and I recently witnessed an educational performance on shepherding by a shepherd from Ireland. He highlighted three qualities about sheep that I found instructive.
The first quality of sheep we discussed is their defenselessness. The second quality is their natural inclination towards community.
The shepherd contended that when sheep dogs or predators approach sheep, the sheep begin to huddle together. They have a better chance of survival as a group than if they allow a predator to isolate them. And on the flip side, when separated the sheep tend to panic and run headlong into danger. In John 10:16, Jesus said, “I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become one flock, with one shepherd.”
Jesus understood the power of community. When His people are gathered together, they are stronger, braver, and more affective. As is pointed out in Ecclesiastes 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
A good shepherd encourages his or her people to become stronger by sticking together and facing obstacles as a community.
Questions for Reflection
- What is community? What does community feel and look like? What has been the best community you were or still are a part of?
- Is there a strong community in your business? How might you improve it? Have you witnessed the development of a strong community? If so, what did it look like?

As shepherds over our teams at work, it is our job to keep our flock from being metaphorically devoured. We are called by God to be their defender against abusive customers and other attacks.
