The Role of Genealogies in Scripture: An Introduction to MatthewExemplo
The Grace and Hope of Salvation
Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus speaks of God’s grace and the hope of salvation for the world. This genealogy not only documents the fulfillment of God’s promises, but it also shows that Jesus is uniquely qualified to fulfill those promises. It speaks to the amazing nature of God’s grace. Every name listed, except Jesus, represents a sinner—both notorious sinners and those who lived relatively godly lives but still needed grace. It’s a powerful reminder that we all need salvation and that, in Christ, God’s grace is available to all.
Jesus is the Son of God from all eternity who made His entrance into this world from heaven. What the first Adam lost; the last Adam came to rescue.
Adam was the first representative head of the human race, and his disobedience brought sin and death to all. Jesus, the last Adam, came into the world to save those given to Him by the Father. He was born, lived a sinless life, died as our substitute, was raised for our justification, and now intercedes for us.
The contrast between the trespass of Adam and the gift of Jesus Christ is striking. Through Adam’s disobedience, many were made sinners. Through Christ’s obedience, many will be made righteous. This underscores the universality of sin and the universality of salvation for those represented by Christ. Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, chosen by God to save sinners forever.
Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities. If you belong to Christ, then He was pierced for your transgressions and crushed for your iniquities. Our sins, no matter how great, cannot shut us out of heaven if we repent and believe the gospel. If Jesus was not ashamed to be associated with those in His genealogy, He will not be ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters if we put our faith in Him.
Let these displays of God's hope deepen your gratitude for God’s grace. Let them strengthen your hope in His salvation. Remember, faith in Jesus is a living faith that transforms your life. He is your Lord, deserving of your love, obedience, and submission.
