Pray for Unity
Today, let's consider the full name of our country: the United States of America.
United.
The use of this adjective as part of our nation's title has always been idealistic but not realistic. Still, it's better to have an exemplary namesake to aspire to—and yet fail at times—than wander about in search of an identity that strong.
Like a birth certificate, the Declaration of Independence twice used "United States of America" in reference to who asserted their independence. Yet from that Continental Congress to this day, "unity" has rarely looked like uniformity. The Declaration underwent dozens of revisions as members debated and altered the document. Yet those who signed it at least agreed on a core ideal: that the states "are, and of right ought to be, free and independent."
What are the core ideals Americans today can agree on? What might be the core ideals God says we should agree on?
Jesus made it clear what happens when there is division instead of unity (Matthew 12:25). We've seen the consequences of that division, and they have been disastrous. We've also seen countries and empires unite under a banner of hatred and aggression, and the results are even worse.
So again, what should Americans unite under? Most major political figures call for unity at various points throughout their terms in office, yet they often disagree with each other on what should unify us. It's a sad irony: those who lead the appeal to unite are themselves divided.
Yet one of the great characteristics of the United States of America today is that ordinary citizens can do a lot to advance a cause, even if our leaders are slow to act. We, as followers of Jesus, can be a unifying force in our communities, just as He prayed for us in John 17:23: "May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me."
We won't agree on everything with those who aren't unified with God, but we can still promote peace, justice, and mercy no matter our race, gender, socioeconomic standing, health, etc. A divided country seeing loving unity amongst people of different races, genders, socioeconomic standings, health, etc., will, for many, be what opens their hearts to Jesus.
Today, pray for the kind of unity that Christ prayed about. Then, take a bold step and pray that people who don't know Jesus will take a closer look at those who are called by His name—the most exemplary namesake anyone could aspire to.
