Staying Free After Breaking Free

FEELING STUCK?

When we arrived at the tube rental place, it was hot and humid. The air was stifling! We couldn’t wait to get in the water. After selecting my flotation device from the unkempt pile of tubes by the riverbank, I stepped into the cool, refreshing water and waited for my family to join in. One by one, we plopped onto our tubes and began drifting with the current.

The thick canopy of trees lining the seven-mile stretch of riverbank offered one breathtaking view after another. We started out floating separately, but because the current kept drifting us apart, we decided to tie our tubes together. That way we could talk as the current carried us along at a steady pace, not too fast and not too slow.

It was a relaxing trip at first. But eventually, we reached a section of whitewater rapids where it began picking up speed. As we exited the rapids, the fast-moving water dumped our cluster of tubes into a circular water-current that looked like a mini whirlpool. At first I didn’t think too much about it. I figured the flowing current would eventually grab-hold and get us moving forward again, but that wasn’t the case.

It didn’t take long to realize we were stuck. Panic set in. I started paddling with all my might, but to no avail. We just kept floating in a circular pattern, round, and round. I eventually realized the only way we were going to get unstuck was to collectively paddle with all our might. Working together, we kicked our feet and paddled with our arms. Finally, we broke free from the whirlpool and resumed our peaceful float downriver.

Sometimes that happens along our life-journey. Something happens that we didn’t anticipate, and we’re thrust into a season of turbulence. Being at the mercy of unexpected circumstances is a helpless feeling. Eventually, panic sets in. We try to move forward, but conditions outside our control pull us back into the chaos until we feel stuck.

Can you relate?

When life dumps us into unexpected places, we have a choice. Stay stuck, or band together with other believers who can help us fight against the current, until we break free.

Staying Free After Breaking Free

It was 2003 when I looked into the mirror and fully surrendered my 25-year battle with bulimia over to Jesus. Although I had been working on recovery with the Lord for more than a year, I realized there was one final step before freedom was truly mine. Twenty-one-years later, I am still walking in freedom! Breaking free is only part of the battle. Staying free requires a new level of strength and strategy. This plan reveals several keys to success that have guided my personal freedom-journey, and they can help you stay free too.
