Our God Is Greater
The Lord My Banner: Yahweh Nissi (yah-WEH nis-SEE) “A banner carried at the head of an [ancient] army or planted on a high hill served as a rallying point for troops before battle or as an announcement of a victory already won… When you pray to Yahweh Nissi [“The Lord is my Banner”] you are praying to the God who is powerful enough to overcome any foe.” – Ann Spangler
Read: Psalm 20:5-9
Light and darkness are not two equal and opposite forces at war. Light always wins. No one ever turns on a switch in a room and timidly watches the light battling the darkness, hoping the light will win. In fact, when we turn on a light in our home, we don’t have to think twice about the reality that the darkness will be immediately overcome.
Yet when it comes to light and darkness in the spiritual sense, we often fear the darkness, the evil, and the injustice may be too powerful to be fully defeated. Some of us may even find ourselves overwhelmed with fear or discouragement. But God’s Word assures us that the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. In the presence of light, darkness is always inferior. It always has to flee. Yahweh Nissi is our victorious King. He tells us that His justice will become a light to the nations and we can wait in hope for Him. (Ps. 51:4-5)

2. What difference would it make if you joined fellow abolitionists with the mindset that the Lord is your banner?
3. God’s Word proclaims that the Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. How do you think this powerful truth applies to the commercial sex trade industry?
