 <div class="label">6</div><div class="s1">Love the Lord Your God</div><div class="p">1These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.</div><div class="p">4Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.#6:4 Or The Lord our God is one Lord; or The Lord is our God, the Lord is one; or The Lord is our God, the Lord alone 5Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.</div><div class="p">10When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you&#8212;a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant&#8212;then when you eat and are satisfied, 12be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.</div><div class="p">13Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name. 14Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 15for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16Do not put the Lord your God to the test as you did at Massah. 17Be sure to keep the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you. 18Do what is right and good in the Lord&#8217;s sight, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, 19thrusting out all your enemies before you, as the Lord said.</div><div class="p">20In the future, when your son asks you, &#8220;What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?&#8221; 21tell him: &#8220;We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders&#8212;great and terrible&#8212;on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. 23But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. 24The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. 25And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">Driving Out the Nations</div><div class="p">1When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations&#8212;the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you&#8212; 2and when the Lord your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally.#7:2 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them; also in verse 26. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. 3Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods, and the Lord&#8217;s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you. 5This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles#7:5 That is, wooden symbols of the goddess Asherah; here and elsewhere in Deuteronomy and burn their idols in the fire. 6For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.</div><div class="p">7The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. 10But</div><div class="q1">those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;</div><div class="q2">he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.</div><div class="m">11Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.</div><div class="p">12If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors. 13He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land&#8212;your grain, new wine and olive oil&#8212;the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. 14You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young. 15The Lord will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you. 16You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.</div><div class="p">17You may say to yourselves, &#8220;These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?&#8221; 18But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. 19You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear. 20Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God. 22The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them. 25The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God. 26Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Pleasures Are Meaningless</div><div class="p">1I said to myself, &#8220;Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.&#8221; But that also proved to be meaningless. 2&#8220;Laughter,&#8221; I said, &#8220;is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?&#8221; 3I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly&#8212;my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.</div><div class="p">4I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. 5I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem#2:8 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain. as well&#8212;the delights of a man&#8217;s heart. 9I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.</div><div class="q1">10I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;</div><div class="q2">I refused my heart no pleasure.</div><div class="q1">My heart took delight in all my labor,</div><div class="q2">and this was the reward for all my toil.</div><div class="q1">11Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done</div><div class="q2">and what I had toiled to achieve,</div><div class="q1">everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;</div><div class="q2">nothing was gained under the sun.</div><div class="s1">Wisdom and Folly Are Meaningless</div><div class="q1">12Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,</div><div class="q2">and also madness and folly.</div><div class="q1">What more can the king&#8217;s successor do</div><div class="q2">than what has already been done?</div><div class="q1">13I saw that wisdom is better than folly,</div><div class="q2">just as light is better than darkness.</div><div class="q1">14The wise have eyes in their heads,</div><div class="q2">while the fool walks in the darkness;</div><div class="q1">but I came to realize</div><div class="q2">that the same fate overtakes them both.</div><div class="p">15Then I said to myself,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;The fate of the fool will overtake me also.</div><div class="q2">What then do I gain by being wise?&#8221;</div><div class="q1">I said to myself,</div><div class="q2">&#8220;This too is meaningless.&#8221;</div><div class="q1">16For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;</div><div class="q2">the days have already come when both have been forgotten.</div><div class="q1">Like the fool, the wise too must die!</div><div class="s1">Toil Is Meaningless</div><div class="p">17So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? 23All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.</div><div class="p">24A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.</div>

 <div class="label">19</div><div class="s1">Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified</div><div class="p">1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3and went up to him again and again, saying, &#8220;Hail, king of the Jews!&#8221; And they slapped him in the face.</div><div class="p">4Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, &#8220;Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.&#8221; 5When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, &#8220;Here is the man!&#8221;</div><div class="p">6As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, &#8220;Crucify! Crucify!&#8221;</div><div class="p">But Pilate answered, &#8220;You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.&#8221;</div><div class="p">7The Jewish leaders insisted, &#8220;We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.&#8221;</div><div class="p">8When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9and he went back inside the palace. &#8220;Where do you come from?&#8221; he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10&#8220;Do you refuse to speak to me?&#8221; Pilate said. &#8220;Don&#8217;t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">11Jesus answered, &#8220;You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.&#8221;</div><div class="p">12From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, &#8220;If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.&#8221;</div><div class="p">13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge&#8217;s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Here is your king,&#8221; Pilate said to the Jews.</div><div class="p">15But they shouted, &#8220;Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Shall I crucify your king?&#8221; Pilate asked.</div><div class="p">&#8220;We have no king but Caesar,&#8221; the chief priests answered.</div><div class="p">16Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.</div><div class="s1">The Crucifixion of Jesus</div><div class="p">So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18There they crucified him, and with him two others&#8212;one on each side and Jesus in the middle.</div><div class="p">19Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. 20Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, &#8220;Do not write &#8216;The King of the Jews,&#8217; but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.&#8221;</div><div class="p">22Pilate answered, &#8220;What I have written, I have written.&#8221;</div><div class="p">23When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.</div><div class="p">24&#8220;Let&#8217;s not tear it,&#8221; they said to one another. &#8220;Let&#8217;s decide by lot who will get it.&#8221;</div><div class="p">This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;They divided my clothes among them</div><div class="q2">and cast lots for my garment.&#8221;#19:24 Psalm 22:18</div><div class="m">So this is what the soldiers did.</div><div class="p">25Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother&#8217;s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, &#8220;Woman,#19:26 The Greek for Woman does not denote any disrespect. here is your son,&#8221; 27and to the disciple, &#8220;Here is your mother.&#8221; From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.</div><div class="s1">The Death of Jesus</div><div class="p">28Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, &#8220;I am thirsty.&#8221; 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus&#8217; lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, &#8220;It is finished.&#8221; With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.</div><div class="p">31Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus&#8217; side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: &#8220;Not one of his bones will be broken,&#8221;#19:36 Exodus 12:46; Num. 9:12; Psalm 34:20 37and, as another scripture says, &#8220;They will look on the one they have pierced.&#8221;#19:37 Zech. 12:10</div><div class="s1">The Burial of Jesus</div><div class="p">38Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate&#8217;s permission, he came and took the body away. 39He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.#19:39 Or about 34 kilograms 40Taking Jesus&#8217; body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.</div>
