 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">Do Not Forget the Lord</div><div class="p">1Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. 2Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. 5Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.</div><div class="p">6Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. 7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land&#8212;a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.</div><div class="p">10When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. 16He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17You may say to yourself, &#8220;My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.&#8221; 18But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.</div><div class="p">19If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. 20Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Not Because of Israel&#8217;s Righteousness</div><div class="p">1Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. 2The people are strong and tall&#8212;Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: &#8220;Who can stand up against the Anakites?&#8221; 3But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.</div><div class="p">4After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, &#8220;The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.&#8221; No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 6Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.</div><div class="s1">The Golden Calf</div><div class="p">7Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8At Horeb you aroused the Lord&#8217;s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you. 9When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. 10The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.</div><div class="p">11At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. 12Then the Lord told me, &#8220;Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.&#8221;</div><div class="p">13And the Lord said to me, &#8220;I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.&#8221;</div><div class="p">15So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. 16When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.</div><div class="p">18Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord&#8217;s sight and so arousing his anger. 19I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me. 20And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.</div><div class="p">22You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.</div><div class="p">23And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, &#8220;Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.&#8221; But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust him or obey him. 24You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.</div><div class="p">25I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights because the Lord had said he would destroy you. 26I prayed to the Lord and said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance that you redeemed by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28Otherwise, the country from which you brought us will say, &#8216;Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.&#8217; 29But they are your people, your inheritance that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">A Time for Everything</div><div class="q1">1There is a time for everything,</div><div class="q2">and a season for every activity under the heavens:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q2">2a time to be born and a time to die,</div><div class="q2">a time to plant and a time to uproot,</div><div class="q2">3a time to kill and a time to heal,</div><div class="q2">a time to tear down and a time to build,</div><div class="q2">4a time to weep and a time to laugh,</div><div class="q2">a time to mourn and a time to dance,</div><div class="q2">5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,</div><div class="q2">a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,</div><div class="q2">6a time to search and a time to give up,</div><div class="q2">a time to keep and a time to throw away,</div><div class="q2">7a time to tear and a time to mend,</div><div class="q2">a time to be silent and a time to speak,</div><div class="q2">8a time to love and a time to hate,</div><div class="q2">a time for war and a time for peace.</div><div class="p">9What do workers gain from their toil? 10I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet#3:11 Or also placed ignorance in the human heart, so that no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil&#8212;this is the gift of God. 14I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.</div><div class="q1">15Whatever is has already been,</div><div class="q2">and what will be has been before;</div><div class="q2">and God will call the past to account.#3:15 Or God calls back the past</div><div class="p">16And I saw something else under the sun:</div><div class="q1">In the place of judgment&#8212;wickedness was there,</div><div class="q2">in the place of justice&#8212;wickedness was there.</div><div class="p">17I said to myself,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;God will bring into judgment</div><div class="q2">both the righteous and the wicked,</div><div class="q1">for there will be a time for every activity,</div><div class="q2">a time to judge every deed.&#8221;</div><div class="p">18I also said to myself, &#8220;As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath#3:19 Or spirit; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?&#8221;</div><div class="p">22So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?</div>

 <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1">The Empty Tomb</div><div class="p">1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, &#8220;They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don&#8217;t know where they have put him!&#8221;</div><div class="p">3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus&#8217; head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene</div><div class="p">11Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus&#8217; body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.</div><div class="p">13They asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;They have taken my Lord away,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and I don&#8217;t know where they have put him.&#8221; 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.</div><div class="p">15He asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Thinking he was the gardener, she said, &#8220;Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.&#8221;</div><div class="p">16Jesus said to her, &#8220;Mary.&#8221;</div><div class="p">She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, &#8220;Rabboni!&#8221; (which means &#8220;Teacher&#8221;).</div><div class="p">17Jesus said, &#8220;Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, &#8216;I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: &#8220;I have seen the Lord!&#8221; And she told them that he had said these things to her.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to His Disciples</div><div class="p">19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221; 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.</div><div class="p">21Again Jesus said, &#8220;Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.&#8221; 22And with that he breathed on them and said, &#8220;Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone&#8217;s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appears to Thomas</div><div class="p">24Now Thomas (also known as Didymus#20:24 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, &#8220;We have seen the Lord!&#8221;</div><div class="p">But he said to them, &#8220;Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.&#8221;</div><div class="p">26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221; 27Then he said to Thomas, &#8220;Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.&#8221;</div><div class="p">28Thomas said to him, &#8220;My Lord and my God!&#8221;</div><div class="p">29Then Jesus told him, &#8220;Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Purpose of John&#8217;s Gospel</div><div class="p">30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe#20:31 Or may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.</div>

 <div class="label">21</div><div class="s1">Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish</div><div class="p">1Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.#21:1 Greek Tiberias It happened this way: 2Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus#21:2 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3&#8220;I&#8217;m going out to fish,&#8221; Simon Peter told them, and they said, &#8220;We&#8217;ll go with you.&#8221; So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.</div><div class="p">4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.</div><div class="p">5He called out to them, &#8220;Friends, haven&#8217;t you any fish?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;No,&#8221; they answered.</div><div class="p">6He said, &#8220;Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.&#8221; When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.</div><div class="p">7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, &#8220;It is the Lord!&#8221; As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, &#8220;It is the Lord,&#8221; he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.#21:8 Or about 90 meters 9When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.</div><div class="p">10Jesus said to them, &#8220;Bring some of the fish you have just caught.&#8221; 11So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, &#8220;Come and have breakfast.&#8221; None of the disciples dared ask him, &#8220;Who are you?&#8221; They knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Reinstates Peter</div><div class="p">15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, &#8220;Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes, Lord,&#8221; he said, &#8220;you know that I love you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Jesus said, &#8220;Feed my lambs.&#8221;</div><div class="p">16Again Jesus said, &#8220;Simon son of John, do you love me?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He answered, &#8220;Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Jesus said, &#8220;Take care of my sheep.&#8221;</div><div class="p">17The third time he said to him, &#8220;Simon son of John, do you love me?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, &#8220;Do you love me?&#8221; He said, &#8220;Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Jesus said, &#8220;Feed my sheep. 18Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.&#8221; 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, &#8220;Follow me!&#8221;</div><div class="p">20Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, &#8220;Lord, who is going to betray you?&#8221;) 21When Peter saw him, he asked, &#8220;Lord, what about him?&#8221;</div><div class="p">22Jesus answered, &#8220;If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.&#8221; 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, &#8220;If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.</div><div class="p">25Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.</div>
