Living Changed: IdentitySample
We Are Not
When people ask me who I am, I tell them I’m a wife, a mom, and a nurse. Like most people, I define myself by my passions and roles. While this isn’t necessarily bad, it can go wrong when we start believing that we are what we do.
Our self-worth and identity can easily become tied to the things we do and don’t do. If we commit adultery, we believe we are bad. If we serve regularly at church, we believe we are good. An identity that changes based on performance or works isn’t God’s design. He created each of us with an identity that is certain and unchangeable. It has no attachment to our failures or regrets, nor is it defined by our talents or spiritual gifts. Nothing and no one but God defines who we are.
From the beginning, God set our identity in stone with no ifs, ands, or buts attached. Believing this gives us the freedom to be exactly who God created us to be. We don’t dwell in the guilt of our mistakes or in the pride of our successes. Instead, we live right where God places us, knowing that we are enough for Him and that He is enough for us.
Remember, our identity isn’t about what we do or don’t do. Instead, it is all about who God says we are.
