Take a minute to imagine the first time these words from Isaiah 61 were read aloud by Jesus. Tune into the weight that they carried. The moment that eternity snapped awake and began to bring to light the position and calling of our Savior. 

Jesus made it clear from day one that his purpose was to bring healing and freedom to humanity. God had wrapped Himself in flesh to heal and to free. Wealthy families, tomb-dwelling demoniacs, wayward women and cast off lepers found themselves in His path, face-to-face with freedom, life, and restoration. Jesus, the Son Of God, used his years on Earth to serve. He could have put on some fantastic supernatural spectacle and automatically demanded an earthly throne and kingdom, a TV interview, a worshipful article or blog, or an explosive Twitter following. Instead, He used the authority He had to heal and to free those who needed Him the most. 

As leaders, are we using our skills and talents to exalt ourselves, or are we intentionally directing our energy to seeing the brokenhearted bound up and the captives freed? Are we looking to climb over others to maintain our position, or are we looking for ways to lift others up? As you reread Isaiah 61:1, ask Jesus to show you where people need someone like you to introduce them to healing and freedom. A selfless leader is one that sees power as an opportunity to empower others who are broken and powerless.
