DAY 35 OF 121

The way of forgiveness

Sin and failure creates a penalty or debt. For example if I injure you or your property I incur a penalty and owe you a debt which is the cost of restoration. When I pay and make restitution my failure is “forgiven” or cancelled by my reparations. Forgiveness here is the cancellation of a debt by paying it off.  In the case of a husband forgetting a wedding anniversary, a debt is created as the wife is at odds with her spouse. How does he make it up to her?  Apologetic words are insufficient!  The debt can only be paid in terms flowers, chocolate, DIY and a meal out! Then the couple will be reconciled and at one again. The incident will be forgotten (I hope!).

If my sin creates a debt to God what reparations can be made to cancel that debt and make us at one?  The Bible explains God’s perspective that the penalty for sin is the death of the sinner.  My sin might be infinitesimally small or I could be guilty of genocide.  Large or small the penalty is the same – death - because without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. My debt to God is unpayable.

Prayer: Thank you Jesus that You have paid my unpayable debt to assure my forgiveness
