Getting Unstuck from Negativity
So far in this study we’ve looked at the process of gaining traction in the common struggles of depression, marriage, sexual sins, and fear. If we’ve struggled with one or more of those issues, we may feel negative about the prospects of gaining traction. And if we can’t personally identify with any of those struggles, we might be critical and complain about people who are stuck in those problems. Negativity attacks us one way or another.
That’s why we need to understand negativity, be able to spot the telltale signs that it’s operating, and make sure we see it from God’s perspective. A struggle or problem won’t be resolved until it’s recognized. We won’t do anything to gain traction until we’re fully convinced that we’re stuck.
If you’re not sure whether negativity is a problem for you, consider asking someone who’s close enough to you to be gut-level honest. Ask them whether you’re a negative person. If so, ask them when and about what you seem to be most negative. The answers may surprise you. All of us are likely negative about some things. When we identify not only the presence of negativity but also the specific circumstances that produce this quality in our lives, we’ll be better equipped to deal with it.
Negativity is an important issue because it affects our witness. Christians should be joyful people, but negativity obscures a joyful spirit. To be salt and light in the world, as Jesus called us to be in Matthew 5:13-16, we must put negativity aside.
If we’re not stuck in negativity, someone close to us probably is and may be ready
to accept our help. Not only is God willing and ready to help those who are stuck, but He also provides us with brothers and sisters in Christ who can give us hands-on help to gain or maintain traction in the slippery places of life.
