Sacred Holidays: A Devotional Leading Up To Halloween

DAY 4 OF 5

DAY FOUR:

I know many well meaning Christians who turn off their front porch light on Halloween, along with all the other days of the year, and hide inside. This is heartbreaking for so many reasons. Mostly because, as I’ve said before, it is the one day of the year our neighbors—who are in our world—knock on our door. Our “going” only involves turning a door knob and saying hello. Easiest thing ever! The saddest part about avoiding Halloween visitors is that lost neighbors miss the chance to experience the light Christians have in them!

Read Matthew 5:14-16. What does this verse call you, and what you should do with that?

Jesus Himself calls you the “light of the world.” This world that we’ve learned He loves dearly and has sent us into—He wants you to light it up! He points out the ridiculous notions of putting light under a basket, because no one hides light. Yet that’s what so many believers do within their Christian context; they hide their light, only letting it shine in formal contexts like church gatherings. We will let others see the light, but we unknowingly force lost friends and family to come on our turf to have a peek.

Friend, let’s not hide our light under something. Instead, let’s put it on a stand so all can see Christ in us.

And let’s define that light for a moment. Shining Christ’s light doesn’t mean pointing fingers all day long at why the world is so bad. Instead, our light is our good works. We are called to let our light shine around us so that others can see our good works, and from that give glory to God!

Instead of being known for the bad we are are against, we have to become people who are known more for the good we do.

Read John 8:12 and note what you learn about light.

Jesus is the light. We simply get to reflect His light. We learn that we reflect that light when we follow Him. So we keep opening and obeying His Word.

Reflect for a moment and ask the Spirit to evaluate how well you are radiating his light in the world. Ask Him to give you greater discipline and faith to follow Him, so you can shine His light at a brighter level.
