DAY 20 OF 31

Two superheroes live in my home. I never know from hour to hour whether Spiderman, Batman, the Backyardigans or one of the Incredibles will come dashing down the hall to save me from vacuuming, loading the dishwasher or folding laundry. Their dad and I enjoy being whisked up in our kids’ imaginative play.

While I love their innocence, I’m more of a superhero wannabe. Don’t mock; you may be one too. Somewhere in crossing the line between the trusting days of childhood and the stresses of adulthood, most of us grownups adopted a messed-up hero mentality. We tend to live by the mistaken notion that it’s up to us to come up with solutions to every problem, including the impossible ones that defy human ability to solve.

We read about relying on Jesus and how the Lord has proven faithful to every generation. We feel appropriate awe when we read of His miracles.

But those miracles are for other people, right? Our situations are different, right?

How exactly is Jesus enough for any problem or grief? He tells us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29, NIV).

Oftentimes Jesus doesn’t remove our troubles. But He promises His strength, peace, joy and hope when we acknowledge Him as our hero instead of trying to assume that role. He offers those vitality-building qualities in unlimited measure. Our job is to stay the course with Him and trust that He will see us through to His goals, which may be different from our own.

Trust as a child, and be amazed at how Jesus will be your Superhero in His way and time.
