DAY 21 OF 31

I grew up in church, so I heard all the stories about God and how He brought the Israelites out of Egypt, parting the Red Sea. I heard about the miracles Jesus performed, such as feeding the five thousand and healing the sick, and then about Him dying on the cross. After hearing the stories over and over again, they started to lose their impact.

I knew Jesus as my friend and my heavenly Father. I had visions of Him smiling down from heaven on me.

I didn’t realize it, but I had made my vision of God too “safe” and familiar. I had boxed Him in so I only saw a fraction of His character. But God doesn’t want me to only see a fraction, because that’s not who He really is. I need to know all of Him, not just the beautiful and gentle parts of Him.

When God spoke to the Israelites from Mount Horeb, He was cloaked in darkness and clouds, and fire blazed from the mountain. Those words evoke a different view of God, don’t they? At Mount Horeb, God was powerful and a little terrible, even. This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

Reading about God in the Bible opens my eyes to more of who He really is. Jesus is still my friend and my heavenly Father, but He is also Almighty God.
