UnpluggedSample

Consider embarking on a “digital fast”. Don’t worry about starting today –take a few days and consider what a digital fast might be like. Explore your heart and needs and readiness – and know we won’t “officially” launch a fast until day 6 of this reading plan.
Are you growing painfully aware of how attached you are to technology? A few years ago I actually tried to make a drastic change to my cell phone habits by switching out my iPhone for a “flip phone”. You know…one of those ancient pieces of technology that people in the movies use when they don’t want to be tracked by the government? Yea, one of those. Except I wasn’t worried about people spying on me – I just wanted to save a few bucks on my cell phone bill.
The idea sounded good at the time, but those phones actually were pretty bad about doing the most essential things phones should do. I couldn’t hear people on it, people couldn’t hear me, and the battery had an exceptionally bad battery life, not to mention how attached I had grown to apps and access a smart phone offers. The attempt to simplify my life crashed and burned.
If we’re going to attempt a “digital fast” we can’t approach it the same way I attempted my cell phone switchover. Our fast needs a purpose – and holy motivator. Today, take some time to write down why you are considering unplugging and what you hope to gain from your fasting experience. When staying unplugged gets hard it will help to remember why you started. Share the purpose of your “digital detox” with a friend so they can help you (or maybe even fast with you)!

About this Plan

Life is moving at an incredibly fast pace. It can be hard, in the midst of all the things we have going on, to find time to connect with God in meaningful ways. “Unplugged” will challenge you to evaluate your habits with technology and busyness, and encourage you to pursue moments of solitude – times to connect between you and Jesus.
