742 BC On the death of Jotham, Ahaz becomes king and turns to idols. Aram/Syria and Israel together attack the Southern Kingdom to force it into their alliance against Assyria but cannot conquer it. Isaiah tells Ahaz that Israel and Syria will not last and Assyria cannot be trusted. With Ahaz unrepentant, God allows Syria to kill and exile many people. Syria takes and rebuilds the port of Elath.
