Thoughts on the Passage

Crucifixion was a brutal, painful, and humiliating way to die. It was designed to inflict maximum pain for the longest period of time. Many died of thirst and loss of fluid before they died from the wounds. Many consider it to be the most brutal and painful form of torture than has ever been devised.

They also maximized the shame and humiliation. Jesus was placed between two criminals as a symbol that He was the worst of the offenders. They strip Him naked and then gambled for His clothes. It was close to the city where everyone could walk by and see Him and read the crime that He committed—King of the Jews.

David wrote Psalm 22 and it was a literary description of David’s response to the attack of his enemies, but more than that, it is a prophetic picture of Jesus and the death He would die. For David, the attack of his enemies seemed to be this brutal. For Jesus it was actually this bad. Read all of Psalm 22 to catch the whole picture.

I find it difficult to read about Jesus’ suffering. I struggle with how brutal man can be to man. I struggle with the magnitude of the anger and brutality thrown at Jesus when He did nothing wrong. I struggle with how much He loved us to stay there and bear that cost. 

I struggle with how much my sin actually cost and what Jesus had to go through for me. 

Application

Today is a time to just reflect. Reflect on our sin. Think about what our sin costs and what Jesus did to set us free from our sin.

Take time to think – and be thankful to Jesus.

Time to Pray

Father, You know why my sin required this cost. You know that Jesus had to die for me so that my sin could be forgiven. It is not easy for me to read. It is not easy for me ponder and reflect on it. I struggle… but I am so thankful for Jesus. I thank You for sending Your Son to die for me. Thank you so much. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
