Jesus' Words on the Cross  

Thoughts on the Passage

There are seven words that Jesus gives from the cross. John gives three of them. 

The first word – Jesus has responsibility of His mother (Joseph has likely passed on) and He takes care of His mother by passing the responsibility on to John. Remember that when you have aging parents and make sure they are taken care of.

The second word – John’s record is to fulfill a prophetic passage in Psalm 69 – He is thirsty. Jesus is about to die. He probably does not care if He drinks, but He cares about the Word of God. So He drinks the sour wine. 

And the third word – “it is finished”. These are powerful words.  Jesus has fulfilled everything. We think first about Jesus paying the price for all mankind’s sin. That is His primary mission and it is done. However, Jesus makes sure all the little things are done as well – like the request for a drink. He makes sure everything is finished off completely.

Also, when we look at the other passages, we see that at this time Jesus gives a shout. These words were shouted out! It was a shout of victory. 

Are His words of victory resounding in our lives today?

Application

Can God trust us to be faithful in getting the little things taken care of?

Let God show us an area where victory needs to be total in our lives – where it still needs some work.

Time to Pray

Father, what a day! History hinged on this moment when Jesus finished the work of Salvation. Today, I take time to celebrate this special moment. I take time to look at my life and see if I am being faithful as well. Faithful in the little things as well as the bigger things. I see Jesus being faithful in the midst of great suffering – mine is not nearly so challenging. If He can be faithful in all the little things during that moment of stress and difficulty, strengthen me to be faithful in my little things as well. Help me fulfill the little things of You Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
