The Art Of Neighboring: Week ThreeSample

When we obey our Lord, our actions extend far beyond ourselves. In fact, our love for each other and for those outside of our community will bring glory to God.
Pray
Lord Christ, let your kingdom come. Thank you for inviting me to participate in your kingdom work.
Read
Jesus has just finished teaching his disciples about his kingdom. It seems that Jesus’s kingdom will upend the expected course of things. Jesus is aware that when his disciples live according to his kingdom rules, they’ll stick out, be different from the people around them.
Matthew 5:13-16
Reflect
Think about some of the functions of salt and of light. By choosing to compare his disciples to these things, what is Jesus saying about their influence? Think about your own life. Would someone ask you why you’re different? Would your neighbors (or co-workers, or extended family) be able to identify God through your good works?
Respond
Ask your spouse, roommates or a close friend to pray with you that God would use you in a way that causes others to ask about him or to praise him.

About this Plan

Have you been afraid to reach out to a neighbor? What if you offend her? What if he laughs at you? What if she isn’t interested in getting to know you? Loving others can seem risky, even intimidating. But God’s Word trains us to be bold, generous, loving neighbors.
