Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of Peace And Justice

DAY 12 OF 31

October 12

Introduction

The Festival of Shelters took place at the end of the fall harvest (see Exodus 23:16; Deuteronomy 16:13-15). The people were to build shelters made of tree branches and were to live in them for seven days to recall the temporary shelters their ancestors lived in as they wandered in the desert.

Today’s Scripture: Numbers 29:12b

Celebrate this festival in honor of the LORD for seven days and do no work.

Today’s Reading

Numbers 29:12-40

Reflect

Today’s reading describes the offerings that were to be made on each of the seven days of the festival. What were these offerings? Based on the readings from the book of Numbers these past four days, how important were these offerings to the Israelites in daily life, worship, and special festivals? How important in daily life are offerings, worship, and religious ceremonies today?

Pray

Lord God, daily will I praise you and thank you for your everlasting love, mercy, and care. Order my steps this day, and may my life be a living sacrifice of service to you. Amen.
