One Minute Apologist - Doubting Toward Faith

DAY 7 OF 10

WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL DOUBT?

We experience intellectual doubt when we struggle to find an answer to a question we’ve stumbled upon. The questions that plague the intellectual doubter can feel insurmountable and can also paralyze their relationship to Christ.

The number of questions begins to snowball, outgrowing our ability to find all the answers. During those times it may seem easier to simply do nothing at all, to take a break in our search for answers. That’s not the way we move forward.

With an increasing number of unanswered questions, how does a Christian keep his passion for Christ intact? Hank Hanegraaff, The Bible Answer Man, once told me: “Instead of being crushed by a gigantic snowball of questions, let your questions increase your awe for God. If we could figure God out, He’d be a pretty small God.” That resonated with me.

Sometimes there is a fairly obvious answer, while at other times there’s not. Sometimes we have to dig. So take heart. When you come across these intellectual forks in the road, don’t be alarmed. Step back, take a deep breath, remember there are explanations out there, and learn to enjoy the process while continuing to grow closer to God. God never bypasses the mind on the way to the heart.

Ask yourself; do I want my doubts confirmed so I can move away from God? Or, do I want my doubts answered so that I can move closer to God. Only when you desire moving closer to God will you be able to fully DOUBT TOWARD FAITH.

REFLECTION

Belief in God requires faith, but it doesn’t require you to leave your mind at the door. It is okay to have intellectual doubt. Just make sure that you are having your doubts answered by a reputable source. Pray that God will give you wisdom and comfort during those times of intense intellectual doubt.
