What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="MRK.6.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Isn&#8217;t this the carpenter? Isn&#8217;t this Mary&#8217;s son and the brother of James, Joseph,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:3 </span><span class="ft">Greek </span><span class="fqa">Joses</span><span class="ft">, a variant of </span><span class="fq">Joseph</span></span></span><span class="content"> Judas and Simon? Aren&#8217;t his sisters here with us?&#8221; And they took offense at him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="MRK.6.3"></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="MRK.6.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Jesus said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="MRK.6.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MRK.6.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He was amazed at their lack of faith.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Sends Out the Twelve</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MRK.6.6"><span class="content">Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="MRK.6.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="MRK.6.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="MRK.6.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">These were his instructions: </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Take nothing for the journey except a staff&#8212;no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="MRK.6.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="MRK.6.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="MRK.6.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="MRK.6.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="MRK.6.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">They went out and preached that people should repent. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="MRK.6.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">John the Baptist Beheaded</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="MRK.6.13"></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="MRK.6.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">King Herod heard about this, for Jesus&#8217; name had become well known. Some were saying,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:14 </span><span class="ft">Some early manuscripts </span><span class="fqa">He was saying</span></span></span><span class="content"> &#8220;John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="MRK.6.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="MRK.6.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Others said, &#8220;He is Elijah.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="MRK.6.15"><span class="content">And still others claimed, &#8220;He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="MRK.6.15"></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="MRK.6.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">But when Herod heard this, he said, &#8220;John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="MRK.6.16"></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="MRK.6.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip&#8217;s wife, whom he had married. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="MRK.6.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">For John had been saying to Herod, &#8220;It is not lawful for you to have your brother&#8217;s wife.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="MRK.6.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="MRK.6.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:20 </span><span class="ft">Some early manuscripts </span><span class="fqa">he did many things</span></span></span><span class="content">; yet he liked to listen to him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="MRK.6.20"></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="MRK.6.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="MRK.6.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">When the daughter of</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:22 </span><span class="ft">Some early manuscripts </span><span class="fqa">When his daughter</span></span></span><span class="content"> Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="MRK.6.22"><span class="content">The king said to the girl, &#8220;Ask me for anything you want, and I&#8217;ll give it to you.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="MRK.6.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">And he promised her with an oath, &#8220;Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="MRK.6.23"></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="MRK.6.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">She went out and said to her mother, &#8220;What shall I ask for?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="MRK.6.24"><span class="content">&#8220;The head of John the Baptist,&#8221; she answered.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="MRK.6.24"></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="MRK.6.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: &#8220;I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="MRK.6.25"></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="MRK.6.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="MRK.6.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John&#8217;s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="MRK.6.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="MRK.6.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">On hearing of this, John&#8217;s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="MRK.6.29"></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="MRK.6.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="MRK.6.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="MRK.6.31"></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="MRK.6.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="MRK.6.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="MRK.6.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="MRK.6.34"></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="MRK.6.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. &#8220;This is a remote place,&#8221; they said, &#8220;and it&#8217;s already very late. </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="MRK.6.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="MRK.6.36"></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="MRK.6.37"><span class="label">37</span><span class="content">But he answered, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;You give them something to eat.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="MRK.6.37"><span class="content">They said to him, &#8220;That would take more than half a year&#8217;s wages</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:37 </span><span class="ft">Greek </span><span class="fqa">take two hundred denarii</span></span></span><span class="content">! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="MRK.6.37"></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="MRK.6.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="content"> </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;How many loaves do you have?&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> he asked. </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Go and see.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="MRK.6.38"><span class="content">When they found out, they said, &#8220;Five&#8212;and two fish.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="MRK.6.38"></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="MRK.6.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="content">Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="MRK.6.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. </span></span><span class="verse v41" data-usfm="MRK.6.41"><span class="label">41</span><span class="content">Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. </span></span><span class="verse v42" data-usfm="MRK.6.42"><span class="label">42</span><span class="content">They all ate and were satisfied, </span></span><span class="verse v43" data-usfm="MRK.6.43"><span class="label">43</span><span class="content">and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. </span></span><span class="verse v44" data-usfm="MRK.6.44"><span class="label">44</span><span class="content">The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Walks on the Water</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v44" data-usfm="MRK.6.44"></span><span class="verse v45" data-usfm="MRK.6.45"><span class="label">45</span><span class="content">Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. </span></span><span class="verse v46" data-usfm="MRK.6.46"><span class="label">46</span><span class="content">After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v46" data-usfm="MRK.6.46"></span><span class="verse v47" data-usfm="MRK.6.47"><span class="label">47</span><span class="content">Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. </span></span><span class="verse v48" data-usfm="MRK.6.48"><span class="label">48</span><span class="content">He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, </span></span><span class="verse v49" data-usfm="MRK.6.49"><span class="label">49</span><span class="content">but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, </span></span><span class="verse v50" data-usfm="MRK.6.50"><span class="label">50</span><span class="content">because they all saw him and were terrified.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v50" data-usfm="MRK.6.50"><span class="content">Immediately he spoke to them and said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Take courage! It is I. Don&#8217;t be afraid.&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v51" data-usfm="MRK.6.51"><span class="label">51</span><span class="content">Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, </span></span><span class="verse v52" data-usfm="MRK.6.52"><span class="label">52</span><span class="content">for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v52" data-usfm="MRK.6.52"></span><span class="verse v53" data-usfm="MRK.6.53"><span class="label">53</span><span class="content">When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. </span></span><span class="verse v54" data-usfm="MRK.6.54"><span class="label">54</span><span class="content">As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v55" data-usfm="MRK.6.55"><span class="label">55</span><span class="content">They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. </span></span><span class="verse v56" data-usfm="MRK.6.56"><span class="label">56</span><span class="content">And wherever he went&#8212;into villages, towns or countryside&#8212;they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">34</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Dinah and the Shechemites</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="GEN.34.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.34.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.34.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.34.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">And Shechem said to his father Hamor, &#8220;Get me this girl as my wife.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.34.4"></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.34.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.34.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.34.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Then Shechem&#8217;s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.34.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Meanwhile, Jacob&#8217;s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">34:7 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">against</span></span></span><span class="content"> Israel by sleeping with Jacob&#8217;s daughter&#8212;a thing that should not be done.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.34.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.34.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But Hamor said to them, &#8220;My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.34.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.34.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">34:10 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">move about freely</span><span class="ft">; also in verse 21</span></span></span><span class="content"> in it, and acquire property in it.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.34.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.34.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Then Shechem said to Dinah&#8217;s father and brothers, &#8220;Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.34.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I&#8217;ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.34.12"></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.34.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob&#8217;s sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.34.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">They said to them, &#8220;We can&#8217;t do such a thing; we can&#8217;t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.34.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.34.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We&#8217;ll settle among you and become one people with you. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.34.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we&#8217;ll take our sister and go.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.34.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.34.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.34.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The young man, who was the most honored of all his father&#8217;s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob&#8217;s daughter. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.34.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.34.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">&#8220;These men are friendly toward us,&#8221; they said. &#8220;Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.34.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.34.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Won&#8217;t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.34.23"></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.34.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.34.24"></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.34.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob&#8217;s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah&#8217;s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="GEN.34.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem&#8217;s house and left. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="GEN.34.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">34:27 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">because</span></span></span><span class="content"> their sister had been defiled. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="GEN.34.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="GEN.34.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="GEN.34.29"></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="GEN.34.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, &#8220;You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ROM.6.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Or don&#8217;t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ROM.6.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ROM.6.4"></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ROM.6.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ROM.6.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:6 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">be rendered powerless</span></span></span><span class="content"> that we should no longer be slaves to sin&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ROM.6.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ROM.6.7"></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ROM.6.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ROM.6.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ROM.6.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ROM.6.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ROM.6.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ROM.6.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ROM.6.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ROM.6.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Slaves to Righteousness</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ROM.6.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ROM.6.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ROM.6.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Don&#8217;t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey&#8212;whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ROM.6.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ROM.6.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ROM.6.18"></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ROM.6.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ROM.6.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ROM.6.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ROM.6.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ROM.6.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">6:23 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">through</span></span></span><span class="content"> Christ Jesus our Lord.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Woman and the Dragon</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="REV.12.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="REV.12.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="REV.12.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="REV.12.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="REV.12.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">She gave birth to a son, a male child, who &#8220;will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">12:5 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" usfm="PSA.2.9">Psalm 2:9</span></span></span></span><span class="content"> And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="REV.12.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="REV.12.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="REV.12.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.12.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="REV.12.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">The great dragon was hurled down&#8212;that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="REV.12.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="content">&#8220;Now have come the salvation and the power</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="content">and the kingdom of our God,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="content">and the authority of his Messiah.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="content">For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="content">who accuses them before our God day and night,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"><span class="content">has been hurled down.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.12.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.12.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">They triumphed over him</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.12.11"><span class="content">by the blood of the Lamb</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.12.11"><span class="content">and by the word of their testimony;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.12.11"><span class="content">they did not love their lives so much</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.12.11"><span class="content">as to shrink from death.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.12.11"></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Therefore rejoice, you heavens</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"><span class="content">and you who dwell in them!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"><span class="content">But woe to the earth and the sea,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"><span class="content">because the devil has gone down to you!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"><span class="content">He is filled with fury,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"><span class="content">because he knows that his time is short.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.12.12"></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="REV.12.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="REV.12.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent&#8217;s reach. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="REV.12.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="REV.12.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="REV.12.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring&#8212;those who keep God&#8217;s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.</span></span></div>
