Introduction
After Jesus is baptized by John at the Jordan River, the Spirit leads him into the desert where he is tempted by the devil. After the devil departs, angels come to help Jesus. Jesus then moves north to Capernaum and begins his public ministry in Galilee. He calls his first four disciples and travels throughout Galilee, teaching, preaching, and healing the sick.
Today’s Scripture: Matthew 4:17
From that time Jesus began to preach his message: “Turn away from your sins, because the Kingdom of heaven is near!”
Today’s Reading
Matthew 4:1-25
Reflect
Jesus had fasted for forty days and nights and was approached by the devil when he was hungry and vulnerable. In what ways did the devil try to tempt Jesus? How did Jesus respond? In what areas of your life are you most vulnerable? What helps you to resist temptation? What invitation did Jesus extend to Simon Peter and Andrew (verse 19)? In what ways does your community of faith invite and welcome people?
Pray
Lord Jesus, you have called me to follow you. When I am faced with temptation, help me to place my trust in you and in your teachings. Guide me each day and empower me to share the Good News and extend your Kingdom so that all may know of your love and salvation. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those facing temptation
