Live A Life Of WorshipSample
What Else Do You Worship?
Ouch! Did today’s title sting a little bit? Like, “Um, I worship God only. Sheesh!”
Guess what? Basically everyone has seasons in their life when they’re worshiping something other than God. Including you.
Don’t believe it? Watch this.
So, what’s in your hands? What do you spend the majority of your time on?
If you’re like most, you’ve experienced (or maybe are experiencing) times when your mind and hands are occupied by things other than following Jesus. Sometimes even good things crowd out your time spent one-on-one in prayer with God. That’s what happened to a woman named Martha in today’s reading from the book of Luke. She was busy preparing a dinner—for Jesus. A good thing, right? Well, it could’ve been, but her attitude wasn’t full of worship, and none of her attention was on Jesus.
Martha even got mad at her sister for not helping! You’ll read what Jesus said to Martha. (Hint: He reminded her that she needs only one priority. Yup. It’s Jesus!)
Remember, activities or things you enjoy is great! You should be grateful to God for them. But when things or activities take all your attention and crowd God out of your life? That’s when it’s getting tricky. Dangerous even. That’s when it could be that you’re actually worshiping them instead of God.
Ask yourself: What would my friends say is the most important thing in my life? How can I worship God, no matter what I’m doing?
Challenge yourself: Think of something you spend a lot of time doing that you really don’t need to. Especially if it’s something that takes over your regular time in prayer or reading your Bible. Sports? Music? FaceTime? Whatever it is, remind yourself that it’s not more important than God by giving it up for a while. Maybe 24 hours. Maybe a week. However long you think you need to give it up in order to remind yourself that God is first in your life. Each time you think about the thing you’re giving up, say, “God, I love you more!”
Pray: God, thank You for who You are. You deserve to be first in my life. Everything good You’ve given me reminds me to thank and worship You! Help my hands and my heart always to be active with You and Your work. In Jesus’ name, amen.
