Psalm 21 was a prayer of thanksgiving to God because the psalm before this one, Psalm 20, was focused on asking for God to protect him and prosper him. There is also an eye to the Messiah and His coming kingdom, which is more applicable to us as we read it now than to David when he wrote it, showing the prophetic edge found throughout the Psalms.
