 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">The Faith of the Centurion</div><div class="p">1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2There a centurion&#8217;s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, &#8220;This man deserves to have you do this, 5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.&#8221; 6So Jesus went with them.</div><div class="p">He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: &#8220;Lord, don&#8217;t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, &#8216;Go,&#8217; and he goes; and that one, &#8216;Come,&#8217; and he comes. I say to my servant, &#8216;Do this,&#8217; and he does it.&#8221;</div><div class="p">9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, &#8220;I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.&#8221; 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Raises a Widow&#8217;s Son</div><div class="p">11Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out&#8212;the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, &#8220;Don&#8217;t cry.&#8221;</div><div class="p">14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, &#8220;Young man, I say to you, get up!&#8221; 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.</div><div class="p">16They were all filled with awe and praised God. &#8220;A great prophet has appeared among us,&#8221; they said. &#8220;God has come to help his people.&#8221; 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.</div><div class="s1">Jesus and John the Baptist</div><div class="p">18John&#8217;s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19he sent them to the Lord to ask, &#8220;Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?&#8221;</div><div class="p">20When the men came to Jesus, they said, &#8220;John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, &#8216;Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22So he replied to the messengers, &#8220;Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy#7:22 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">24After John&#8217;s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: &#8220;What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is the one about whom it is written:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will send my messenger ahead of you,</div><div class="q2">who will prepare your way before you.&#8217; #7:27 Mal. 3:1</div><div class="m">28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.&#8221;</div><div class="p">29(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus&#8217; words, acknowledged that God&#8217;s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God&#8217;s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)</div><div class="p">31Jesus went on to say, &#8220;To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;We played the pipe for you,</div><div class="q2">and you did not dance;</div><div class="q1">we sang a dirge,</div><div class="q2">and you did not cry.&#8217;</div><div class="m">33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, &#8216;He has a demon.&#8217; 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, &#8216;Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.&#8217; 35But wisdom is proved right by all her children.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman</div><div class="p">36When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee&#8217;s house and reclined at the table. 37A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee&#8217;s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.</div><div class="p">39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, &#8220;If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is&#8212;that she is a sinner.&#8221;</div><div class="p">40Jesus answered him, &#8220;Simon, I have something to tell you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Tell me, teacher,&#8221; he said.</div><div class="p">41 &#8220;Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, #7:41 A denarius was the usual daily wage of a day laborer (see Matt. 20:2). and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?&#8221;</div><div class="p">43Simon replied, &#8220;I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;You have judged correctly,&#8221; Jesus said.</div><div class="p">44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, &#8220;Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven&#8212;as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.&#8221;</div><div class="p">48Then Jesus said to her, &#8220;Your sins are forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="p">49The other guests began to say among themselves, &#8220;Who is this who even forgives sins?&#8221;</div><div class="p">50Jesus said to the woman, &#8220;Your faith has saved you; go in peace.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">21</div><div class="s1">Rules for Priests</div><div class="p">1The Lord said to Moses, &#8220;Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: &#8216;A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die, 2except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother, 3or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him since she has no husband&#8212;for her he may make himself unclean. 4He must not make himself unclean for people related to him by marriage,#21:4 Or unclean as a leader among his people and so defile himself.</div><div class="p">5&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies. 6They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the food offerings to the Lord, the food of their God, they are to be holy.</div><div class="p">7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced from their husbands, because priests are holy to their God. 8Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Consider them holy, because I the Lord am holy&#8212;I who make you holy.</div><div class="p">9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a priest&#8217;s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.</div><div class="p">10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt#21:10 Or not uncover his head or tear his clothes. 11He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother, 12nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p">13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The woman he marries must be a virgin. 14He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people, 15so that he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the Lord, who makes him holy.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">16The Lord said to Moses, 17&#8220;Say to Aaron: &#8216;For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20or who is a hunchback or a dwarf, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. 21No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the food offerings to the Lord. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. 22He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; 23yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">24So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.</div>

 <div class="label">22</div><div class="p">1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p">3&#8220;Say to them: &#8216;For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the Lord, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p">4&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a descendant of Aaron has a defiling skin disease#22:4 The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated &#8220;leprosy,&#8221; was used for various diseases affecting the skin. or a bodily discharge, he may not eat the sacred offerings until he is cleansed. He will also be unclean if he touches something defiled by a corpse or by anyone who has an emission of semen, 5or if he touches any crawling thing that makes him unclean, or any person who makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be. 6The one who touches any such thing will be unclean till evening. He must not eat any of the sacred offerings unless he has bathed himself with water. 7When the sun goes down, he will be clean, and after that he may eat the sacred offerings, for they are his food. 8He must not eat anything found dead or torn by wild animals, and so become unclean through it. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p">9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The priests are to perform my service in such a way that they do not become guilty and die for treating it with contempt. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.</div><div class="p">10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;No one outside a priest&#8217;s family may eat the sacred offering, nor may the guest of a priest or his hired worker eat it. 11But if a priest buys a slave with money, or if slaves are born in his household, they may eat his food. 12If a priest&#8217;s daughter marries anyone other than a priest, she may not eat any of the sacred contributions. 13But if a priest&#8217;s daughter becomes a widow or is divorced, yet has no children, and she returns to live in her father&#8217;s household as in her youth, she may eat her father&#8217;s food. No unauthorized person, however, may eat it.</div><div class="p">14&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Anyone who eats a sacred offering by mistake must make restitution to the priest for the offering and add a fifth of the value to it. 15The priests must not desecrate the sacred offerings the Israelites present to the Lord 16by allowing them to eat the sacred offerings and so bring upon them guilt requiring payment. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Unacceptable Sacrifices</div><div class="p">17The Lord said to Moses, 18&#8220;Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;If any of you&#8212;whether an Israelite or a foreigner residing in Israel&#8212;presents a gift for a burnt offering to the Lord, either to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering, 19you must present a male without defect from the cattle, sheep or goats in order that it may be accepted on your behalf. 20Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf. 21When anyone brings from the herd or flock a fellowship offering to the Lord to fulfill a special vow or as a freewill offering, it must be without defect or blemish to be acceptable. 22Do not offer to the Lord the blind, the injured or the maimed, or anything with warts or festering or running sores. Do not place any of these on the altar as a food offering presented to the Lord. 23You may, however, present as a freewill offering an ox#22:23 The Hebrew word can refer to either male or female. or a sheep that is deformed or stunted, but it will not be accepted in fulfillment of a vow. 24You must not offer to the Lord an animal whose testicles are bruised, crushed, torn or cut. You must not do this in your own land, 25and you must not accept such animals from the hand of a foreigner and offer them as the food of your God. They will not be accepted on your behalf, because they are deformed and have defects.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">26The Lord said to Moses, 27&#8220;When a calf, a lamb or a goat is born, it is to remain with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable as a food offering presented to the Lord. 28Do not slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young on the same day.</div><div class="p">29&#8220;When you sacrifice a thank offering to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf. 30It must be eaten that same day; leave none of it till morning. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p">31&#8220;Keep my commands and follow them. I am the Lord. 32Do not profane my holy name, for I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the Lord, who made you holy 33and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord.&#8221;</div>
