Daily Bible Reading - December 2020 God's Life-Giving Word of JoySample
December 3
Introduction
Today we will begin reading excerpts from the book of Daniel, a book offering a hope-filled response during a time when the Jews were suffering greatly under the persecution and oppression of a pagan king. Chapters 7—12, with their apocalyptic visions, comprise the second half of the book. In today’s reading, Daniel describes his visions of the four beasts and of the One who has been living forever.
Scripture Reading
Daniel 7:1-14
Today’s Key Verse: Daniel 7:14b
His authority would last forever, and his kingdom would never end.
Reflect
In Daniel’s first vision (verses 1-8), the four ferocious beasts represent the known world empires: Babylonian, Median, Persian, and Greek. The ten horns on the last beast are meant to represent the ten successors of Alexander the Great. How is each beast described? Daniel’s second vision (verses 9-14) is a scene of divine judgment. How is the one on the throne described? What happens to each of the four beasts/empires (verses 11, 12)? The reading concludes with authority given to one who “looked like a human being” (verse 14). What is the extent of his authority? How do you interpret this verse?
Pray
Holy God, you are seated on your throne and you execute righteous judgment. Teach me to serve you faithfully, always. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those who inspire us with visions of hope
Tomorrow’s Reading
