The Highlights Series Part 1 by John Luke Robertson

DAY 2 OF 31

Genesis is the first book in the bible. The word “Genesis” actually means beginning. Genesis records the beginning of the world, the beginning of God’s creation, the beginning of God’s nation of Israel, and the beginning of the story of salvation for all mankind.

Moses is credited as the author of Genesis. Moses wasn’t there at the beginning of time, but Moses wrote down the stories that were handed down to him.

Genesis sets up a pattern of God’s people that you can find throughout the bible. It goes like this: God gives blessings to people and people reject God. (I know. Not a great pattern to follow, but it happens.) Genesis also answers two big questions. Here they are:

1. “How did God’s relationship with the world begin?”

2. “Where did the nation of Israel come from?”

Genesis 1 is written in a form of poetry. The poem is conveying the beginning of everything in a concise, memorable, and meaningful way.It lays out the creation in a beautiful way leading up to the creation of humans (that’s us). We’re told all of creation was good, but when God created humans He said it was very good. I want to point out that God declared that men and women together are very good. Separately they are not. We are created in God’s image and that image is man and woman together. In Genesis 1:2, it says the Spirit of God. The word Spirit is a feminine word. The word for God is elohim and that is a masculine word. Now isn't that interesting? We have the image of a masculine God with a feminine spirit. Now God has created his image and its two parts. Male and female.

As you read think about these two biblical themes. The first is the number seven. Seven means completion or perfection to the Hebrews so any time you see the number seven, the bible is talking about God’s completion or perfect. The same with 14 (7+7) and 21 (7+7+7). The second idea is of rest. The God of the Bible is the God of rest. The God of completion and the God of enough. Knowing God means knowing you can rest.
