The Highlights Series Part 1 by John Luke Robertson

DAY 1 OF 31

Jonah was a prophet. A prophet was someone who spoke to God and delivered messages from Him about the future. Kings at this time often had prophets nearby to ask them things about what was going to happen. Jonah was not the only prophet around, but he’s the one we’re going to get to read about today.

One thing you’ll discover is no one in the book of Jonah does what you expect them to do. Jonah was a prophet of God, yet he ran from God when God gave him a job. You’ll also see that the people of Nineveh were the bad guys, yet they take a serious look at what God had to say to them and turned their lives around.

Jonah is power packed. Here are four things you’ll learn.

1. God has a plan for saving people, and it is nothing like anyone expects.

2. God uses extremely flawed people.

3. God’s love is bigger than we think.

4. And Jesus is foreshadowed in the Old Testament.

But, what you need to pay attention to as you read about Jonah (well, the whole Bible) is how it applies to your life. One of the themes of Jonah that is important for us today is God’s plan always includes a way to redemption. As you read, think about redemption for the city of Nineveh and for Jonah and then yourself. God loves us and while He doesn’t tolerant sin, His love for us always makes a way for us to turn our life around and point it back to God.

I hope you enjoy the story of Jonah as much as I do. It’s a relationship story, just like all of the Bible.

About this Plan

The Highlights Series Part 1 by John Luke Robertson

The Highlights Series was compiled by asking thirty Christians from all walks of life the question, "What are the most important books to read for a new Christian?". The first part is an overview of the major themes and story from Genesis to Revelation. The second part focuses in on Jesus and his followers' lives. This is Part 1.
