The Highlights Series Part 1 by John Luke RobertsonSample
Welcome to Exodus. What is an exodus anyway? Exodus is where we get the word “exit”. Specially, from the Greek word it means “going out.” The book of Exodus is about the slavery of the Israelites by the Egyptian people and then the liberation (or exiting) of the Israelites from that slavery.
The author of this book is Moses who recorded the information God wanted him to record. The first part pf Exodus describes life in Egypt where the people of Israel are slaves. Over and over the Israelites cried out to God for help. God heard their cries and chose Moses to lead them out. The Moses story and how he came to live in the palace of the king (super interesting) is told in Exodus 2. From Moses’ birth story it only gets more interesting. Moses grows up, kills a man, runs away, and saves God’s people all in the same book!
There are a few important characters in the book of Exodus that you will want to take note of. First of all, God is the most important character, but He uses Pharaoh (remember Moses telling Pharaoh to “let my people go”?), Moses (a baby who grows up and God uses to negotiate with Pharaoh to free the people), and Aaron (Moses’ brother who is Moses’ right hand man and spokesperson). It’s no surprise that God is the only perfect person in this book. Like God always does, He uses people who are not perfect to carry out his perfect plan.
This book has a baby floating in a river, a princess, a burning bush, ten plagues, a huge sea opening up, a golden calf, Ten Commandments and lots more interesting events. The overall theme of Exodus is God fulfills His promise and delivers the Israelites out of Egypt into the promise land which fulfills His promise to Abraham.
You might want to take notes because it gets pretty crazy!
About this Plan
The Highlights Series was compiled by asking thirty Christians from all walks of life the question, "What are the most important books to read for a new Christian?". The first part is an overview of the major themes and story from Genesis to Revelation. The second part focuses in on Jesus and his followers' lives. This is Part 1.
