The Highlights Series Part 1 by John Luke RobertsonSample
John, or The Gospel of John, is, of course, written by the apostle, John. John is also known as the son of Zebedee and the brother of James. It gives us the testimony of Jesus Christ and is full of Jesus’ most profound speeches or talks or lessons and His most convincing arguments with the Jews.
John does not start with the birth of Jesus. He goes back to the beginning—Genesis 1 and makes a direct link between the nature of God and the nature of the Word, which is Jesus Christ. John 1:1 says “the Word was with God and the Word was God” in the beginning and then in John 1:14 we’re told “the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
What we do find in the book of John is how Jesus deals with people, how He preaches to great crowds and trains His disciples. How He debates with the religious leaders and offers the gift of eternal life to all who will believe and receive Him.
Reading John is like listening to someone describe anything amazing they actually witnessed. John was there. He witnessed the things he wrote about and, in the end, he declares that Jesus is the "Son of God."
Some things to look for as you read are the statements that say who Jesus is. For starters, look at John 8:12 where it declares, “I am the light of the world.” These statements help us see the Jesus was not like any other man who ever lived. He never says He is like something, He always says He is something. See if you can find all seven.
John’s goal was for all of us to see who Jesus really is and to believe on Him with all of our hearts.
About this Plan
The Highlights Series was compiled by asking thirty Christians from all walks of life the question, "What are the most important books to read for a new Christian?". The first part is an overview of the major themes and story from Genesis to Revelation. The second part focuses in on Jesus and his followers' lives. This is Part 1.
