SWHW Bible Reading Plan - Year 2 January 2021Sample
January 28
Top Takeaway from Joni Stepp:
There is a theme I see all throughout Proverbs:
What you do with your mouth matters.
“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin” Proverbs 13:3.
Not just in the Proverbs; we see it all through Scripture.
- Put away devious talk. (Proverbs 4: 24)
- Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Luke 6:45)
- A soft answer turns away wrath and a harsh word stirs anger. (Proverbs 15:1)
- Put away obscene talk and slander. ( Colossians 3:8)
- Out of the same mouth we can not bless God and curse people made in His image. (James 3:9-10)
- Do all things without grumbling or disputing. (Phllipians 2:14)
- Let your speech always be seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. (Colossians 4:6)
That is just scratching the surface of how many times the Bible instructs us about the words we use.
Our mouth tells so much about our heart.
Our mouth gives the true indicator of what is going on inside.
If we are constantly grumbling, complaining, gossiping, telling lies, etc. we are revealing what we believe to be true about God and about our own lives.
When we are women who use our mouth only to glorify God and to have holy conversations seasoned with salt, it is obvious to those around us what we believe.
A woman who allows the Holy Spirit to control her mouth believes God is in control, what He has given is enough, those in her life are image bearers, and His plan is good regardless of what she can see in the moment.
Lord, give us Your strength and Holy Spirit self control to guard our words. With our mouths we have the ability to point others to You or to cause more chaos and mess. Give us Your words to live by and to fill our minds with. Amen.
