The Community of Believers
Read
Acts 2:42-47
Reflect
Luke, the author of the book of Acts, records the dynamic, fast-paced development of the early church. The details he includes are fascinating and offer a front-row view of the activities of the first believers.
In our reading today, we observe a close-knit community that eagerly desired connection with one another. They met to hear the teaching and preaching from the Apostles and to pray. They “broke bread” as a part of their meetings which could refer to the Lord’s Supper or Communion as we know it today.
It was a time of great awe as the Holy Spirit moved through the hands of the Apostles. Great signs and wonders were an everyday occurrence.
They shared their possessions and met daily at the Temple as well as house to house. We observe a rapidly growing group of believers who enthusiastically participated in all aspects of their faith community.
All of their activities fostered connection. Listening to the Word of God, communion, prayer and worship together. Being in each other’s homes and sharing a meal - all of these promote unity and oneness. Without actively living this out, it’s only theoretical.
Respond
We have seen many methods of “doing church” come and go through the years. The essentials of church life are represented in these passages. Consider what was done and what things you feel are personal growth areas.
