After all the hype and build-up, sports fans are excited when Super Bowl weekend is finally here! Along with the action on the field, we know the event is filled with music, pregame analysis, parties, food, and yes…commercials! Let’s face it, they play a major role in the big day as the NFL and their ad partners convince us we can’t miss any of them.

Although their clever commercials have talking babies and the latest high-tech gadgets, we need to be aware of what's really going on. Each Super Bowl is filled with 30-second messages that tell us what we need to make our lives better, and admittedly, they influence how we spend our money. 

Even beyond Super Bowl Sunday, we're daily affected by the noise we hear around us. There’s so much enticing information being spread that we often don’t realize our thoughts and actions are being swayed by the culture. 

But as followers of Jesus, we're called to view life through a different lens than the world deems important. The Bible says in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” 

1 John 2:15-17 tells us: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

While embracing the festivities of this year’s Super Bowl, let’s allow God and His truth to be at the forefront of our minds…instead of the messages from product-pitching commercials. Let’s remember we’re forgiven and loved, and our true satisfaction is found in Jesus.
