DAY VI // A MATTER OF THE HEART

Are you someone who likes to follow the rules? Sometimes rules can be really practical and help to keep us safe and protected. Take road rules, for example. Imagine how chaotic our roads would be if there were no traffic lights or lanes to drive in! And yet on the other hand, throughout history we have seen that sometimes rules have been put in place that are designed to oppress people and deny them a sense of value or freedom.

In the interaction from today’s passage, some Pharisees and experts in the law were carefully watching Jesus to see if he was going to follow their rules or not. Even today many people assume that being a Christian means following a list of rules. Yet as we study this story, we see that Jesus seems to be revealing a different kind of motivation.

So what motivates God? And what can we learn about God’s heart in this passage that will help us in our own lives?
