Real Hope: Back to EgyptSample
God's Power On Display
ADDITIONAL READING EXODUS 7-11
If you were brought up going to Sunday School, then there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the plagues of Egypt. I even recall singing a song Pharaoh Pharaoh (which, once I hit adulthood, I was stunned to learn was lifted from a classic rock song Louie Louie). Though I think if you read through Exodus 7–11 in later years, you soon realize it’s actually a very serious account.
God gives Moses and Aaron the task of commanding Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go. Pharaoh refuses, and God responds with a miracle. Refusal and plague. Refusal and plague. On and on it goes. We must remember that the Bible is all about God’s promises. It’s easy for us to zoom in on the account of the plagues and forget that God is at work on a much greater level, working to free His people – the Israelites – from slavery. God made it clear this was His plan from before the plagues began (Exodus 3:20).
I think it’s important that we look at the seriousness of what God is doing here. This is more than a good Sunday School tale; this is the God of the universe showing His sovereign power over all things. He is doing these wonders not only to capture the attention of those in Egypt but also the generations of Israelites who would follow, look back and remember that Yahweh is the one true God.
Why not read through Exodus 7–11 and tremble at the awesome power of our God?

About this Plan
As we read through the first 12 chapters of Exodus, we hope you see the beginning of the story of Moses through new eyes. Eyes that see the wondrous and powerful God who orchestrated every moment of Moses’ life so he would be the one who would lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
