Is Jesus Your Best Friend?

DAY 6 OF 17

Friends can keep you sharp

If we want to form an opinion on some matter, it is helpful to exchange thoughts with people around us. Others might have information we don’t have, or can draw our attention to viewpoints we have not considered. And this process functions best with people we know and trust and feel comfortable with. In a context of friendship, we can just “think aloud” without having to carefully weigh every word.

The process of “sharpening another” might not always be pleasant. Sometimes our friends might disagree with our opinions or condemn our behavior. They may even point us to particular sins we were not aware of. But considering their unpleasant words can help us to grow in understanding, in wisdom, and in holiness.

Our Father in heaven also wants to “sharpen” us. Sometimes we need correction. The moment we face his discipline, it seems painful rather than pleasant. “But later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11) Being open to God’s correction will help us grow in faith and holiness.

Are you open to correction by your friends and by your heavenly Father?
