The Poor Rich ManSample
A RICH MAN'S WORLD
We all know the story of the rich man who turned away from Jesus because he decided not to sell all his possessions. (Mark 10:17-31, NLT). We also know that Jesus felt "genuine love" for him (v.21). Why?
We find the answer two verses later. "Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!'" (Mark 10:23, NLT). Jesus was not upset because the rich man struggled to give up his earthy possessions. He was overwhelmed by compassion with the hardships of being rich.
That may sound like an oxymoron to you. What can be so hard about having money? Jesus' audience had the same reaction. "The disciples were astounded" (Mark 10:26, NLT). They were fortunate enough to be better off. They had given up everything to follow Jesus. But Jesus warns them that they may soon receive a financial reward for their sacrifice and then face the same dilemma as the rich man (v.29-30).
Over the next few days, we will explore the downside of financial blessings. However, if you are being blessed by God financially, do not hide from this message. "And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life – this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past" (Ecclesiastes 5:19-20, NLT).

About this Plan
What emotions do you experience when you see someone who is wealthy? Perhaps envy or distrust? In Mark 10, Jesus felt intense compassion for a rich man He interacted with. In this plan, we will explore why financial prosperity often makes it hard to follow Christ. I hope that you will discover a whole new dimension of God's love for people from all walks of life.
