Grace Upon Grace With Sophie Hudson

DAY 6 OF 7

DAY 6

Our house was built in 1974, which means she is officially middle-aged. Over the last few years, my husband, David, and I have pulled in some professionals to update the house a bit.

One of the biggest changes was in our living room, specifically its dark, teal-ish green walls. I didn’t mind the green for the first few years we lived here, but it had started to feel outdated. So we hired the world’s greatest painter, Nicholas, and he covered the dark teal with a creamy beige called Manchester Tan. When I tell you the new color absolutely transformed our living-room life, I am not exaggerating. It brought so much light and airiness into the main part of the house, and we delighted in the transformation for about five weeks.

Until one morning when David saw a big leak in our bathroom ceiling.

He quickly called in a pro again, and we were relieved to hear that the bathroom ceiling would be an easy fix. But what concerned the repairman much more was a big, nasty leak coming from our shower. I have no idea how David and I had never noticed it. Since the leak was inside the wall, we had to call a restoration specialist to determine how much it had damaged the tile in the shower and the floor joists in our basement.

A few days later, David and I met with the kindest restoration specialist. He said ultimately the best option for the long-term health of the shower was to rip it out and rebuild. Since we wanted to address any residual damage and not just put a Band-Aid on the problem, we agreed. It was a bigger job than we expected, but after careful cleaning and rebuilding, the bathroom now functions better than it ever has.

So often, I think, we just want the makeover. We want things to look prettier and shinier and newer. That’s what happened when we painted our living room. And it was great! But sometimes, we need more than lipstick; we need full-blown restoration. And, oh my goodness, it is pure grace to be able to get to the "all-the-way bottom" of a problem, to dig deep and tear out whatever is rotten and not working anymore.

Remember today that your Restoration Specialist is at work. By His grace, He is changing us in the ways we need most.

Trust Him in the process. He is making all things new.

About this Plan

Grace Upon Grace With Sophie Hudson

This plan is based on Sophie Hudson’s teen journaling devotional, “Grace Upon Grace”, created to remind the young women who read it that while the love of Christ compels us to extend grace to one another, it should also compel us to rest in the grace that He extends to us. “Walk into today with the assurance that you are completely seen, completely known, and completely loved.” -Sophie Hudson
