 <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1">Exclusion From the Assembly</div><div class="p">#In Hebrew texts 23:1-25 is numbered 23:2-26. 1No one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the Lord.</div><div class="p">2No one born of a forbidden marriage#23:2 Or one of illegitimate birth nor any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation.</div><div class="p">3No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation. 4For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim#23:4 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia to pronounce a curse on you. 5However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you. 6Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you live.</div><div class="p">7Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country. 8The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the Lord.</div><div class="s1">Uncleanness in the Camp</div><div class="p">9When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure. 10If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there. 11But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.</div><div class="p">12Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. 14For the Lord your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.</div><div class="s1">Miscellaneous Laws</div><div class="p">15If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master. 16Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them.</div><div class="p">17No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. 18You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute#23:18 Hebrew of a dog into the house of the Lord your God to pay any vow, because the Lord your God detests them both.</div><div class="p">19Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest. 20You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.</div><div class="p">21If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. 22But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. 23Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.</div><div class="p">24If you enter your neighbor&#8217;s vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket. 25If you enter your neighbor&#8217;s grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain.</div>

 <div class="label">24</div><div class="s1">The Divisions of Priests</div><div class="p">1These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron:</div><div class="p">The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests. 3With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelek a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering. 4A larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar&#8217;s descendants than among Ithamar&#8217;s, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar&#8217;s descendants and eight heads of families from Ithamar&#8217;s descendants. 5They divided them impartially by casting lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.</div><div class="p">6The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest, Ahimelek son of Abiathar and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites&#8212;one family being taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="li1">7The first lot fell to Jehoiarib,</div><div class="li1">the second to Jedaiah,</div><div class="li1">8the third to Harim,</div><div class="li1">the fourth to Seorim,</div><div class="li1">9the fifth to Malkijah,</div><div class="li1">the sixth to Mijamin,</div><div class="li1">10the seventh to Hakkoz,</div><div class="li1">the eighth to Abijah,</div><div class="li1">11the ninth to Jeshua,</div><div class="li1">the tenth to Shekaniah,</div><div class="li1">12the eleventh to Eliashib,</div><div class="li1">the twelfth to Jakim,</div><div class="li1">13the thirteenth to Huppah,</div><div class="li1">the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,</div><div class="li1">14the fifteenth to Bilgah,</div><div class="li1">the sixteenth to Immer,</div><div class="li1">15the seventeenth to Hezir,</div><div class="li1">the eighteenth to Happizzez,</div><div class="li1">16the nineteenth to Pethahiah,</div><div class="li1">the twentieth to Jehezkel,</div><div class="li1">17the twenty-first to Jakin,</div><div class="li1">the twenty-second to Gamul,</div><div class="li1">18the twenty-third to Delaiah</div><div class="li1">and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">19This was their appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the Lord, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their ancestor Aaron, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him.</div><div class="s1">The Rest of the Levites</div><div class="m">20As for the rest of the descendants of Levi:</div><div class="li1">from the sons of Amram: Shubael;</div><div class="li2">from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.</div><div class="li2">21As for Rehabiah, from his sons:</div><div class="li2">Ishiah was the first.</div><div class="li1">22From the Izharites: Shelomoth;</div><div class="li2">from the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.</div><div class="li1">23The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first,#24:23 Two Hebrew manuscripts and some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 23:19); most Hebrew manuscripts The sons of Jeriah: Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.</div><div class="li1">24The son of Uzziel: Micah;</div><div class="li2">from the sons of Micah: Shamir.</div><div class="li2">25The brother of Micah: Ishiah;</div><div class="li2">from the sons of Ishiah: Zechariah.</div><div class="li1">26The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi.</div><div class="li2">The son of Jaaziah: Beno.</div><div class="li1">27The sons of Merari:</div><div class="li2">from Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zakkur and Ibri.</div><div class="li1">28From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.</div><div class="li1">29From Kish: the son of Kish:</div><div class="li2">Jerahmeel.</div><div class="li1">30And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">These were the Levites, according to their families. 31They also cast lots, just as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelek, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem</div><div class="p">1In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, 2so the king asked me, &#8220;Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.&#8221;</div><div class="p">I was very much afraid, 3but I said to the king, &#8220;May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?&#8221;</div><div class="p">4The king said to me, &#8220;What is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then I prayed to the God of heaven, 5and I answered the king, &#8220;If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.&#8221;</div><div class="p">6Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, &#8220;How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?&#8221; It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time.</div><div class="p">7I also said to him, &#8220;If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? 8And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?&#8221; And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests. 9So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king&#8217;s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.</div><div class="p">10When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.</div><div class="s1">Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem&#8217;s Walls</div><div class="p">11I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days 12I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.</div><div class="p">13By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal#2:13 Or Serpent or Fig Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire. 14Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate and the King&#8217;s Pool, but there was not enough room for my mount to get through; 15so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate. 16The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.</div><div class="p">17Then I said to them, &#8220;You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.&#8221; 18I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.</div><div class="p">They replied, &#8220;Let us start rebuilding.&#8221; So they began this good work.</div><div class="p">19But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. &#8220;What is this you are doing?&#8221; they asked. &#8220;Are you rebelling against the king?&#8221;</div><div class="p">20I answered them by saying, &#8220;The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">Builders of the Wall</div><div class="p">1Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2The men of Jericho built the adjoining section, and Zakkur son of Imri built next to them.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">3The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. 4Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired the next section. Next to him Meshullam son of Berekiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to him Zadok son of Baana also made repairs. 5The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.#3:5 Or their Lord or the governor</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">6The Jeshanah#3:6 Or Old Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. 7Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon and Mizpah&#8212;Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth&#8212;places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates. 8Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired the next section; and Hananiah, one of the perfume-makers, made repairs next to that. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. 9Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section. 10Adjoining this, Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house, and Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs next to him. 11Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens. 12Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section with the help of his daughters.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">13The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah. They rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. They also repaired a thousand cubits#3:13 That is, about 1,500 feet or about 450 meters of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">14The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Rekab, ruler of the district of Beth Hakkerem. He rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">15The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Kol-Hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofing it over and putting its doors and bolts and bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam,#3:15 Hebrew Shelah, a variant of Shiloah, that is, Siloam by the King&#8217;s Garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David. 16Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur, made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs#3:16 Hebrew; Septuagint, some Vulgate manuscripts and Syriac tomb of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes.</div><div class="p">17Next to him, the repairs were made by the Levites under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him, Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, carried out repairs for his district. 18Next to him, the repairs were made by their fellow Levites under Binnui#3:18 Two Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac (see also Septuagint and verse 24); most Hebrew manuscripts Bavvai son of Henadad, ruler of the other half-district of Keilah. 19Next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, from a point facing the ascent to the armory as far as the angle of the wall. 20Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21Next to him, Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib&#8217;s house to the end of it.</div><div class="p">22The repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding region. 23Beyond them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house; and next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house. 24Next to him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from Azariah&#8217;s house to the angle and the corner, 25and Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace near the court of the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh 26and the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the projecting tower. 27Next to them, the men of Tekoa repaired another section, from the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">28Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 29Next to them, Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. Next to him, Shemaiah son of Shekaniah, the guard at the East Gate, made repairs. 30Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berekiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. 31Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; 32and between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.</div>
