Exodus: A Group Study

DAY 1 OF 77

WEEK 1 INTRODUCTION: THE GOD OF PROMISES

To better understand Exodus, we must first begin where everything began: Genesis. As its name and placement in the Bible imply, Genesis is a book of beginnings. The creation of the world, the beginning of the line of Abraham, and the start of God’s covenantal relationship with his people are all recorded in Genesis. As you navigate some brief snapshots of Genesis this week, you will see God is writing a far bigger and better story than anyone could ever anticipate.

What is this passage saying?

God calls Abram and his wife from their homeland to a new land – a promised land. He delivers His covenant promises to him. Abram responds in faith, building an altar in worship and praise to God.

What is this passage teaching?

God chose Abram to be the recipient of an extraordinary covenant. He promised Abram that he would be the father of a great nation, with blessings not only for himself but for all the families of the earth. While God’s calling came with great promises, it was not without cost. At 75 years old, God was calling Abram to leave his family and his homeland. God did not even tell Abram where he was going (Hebrews 11:8)! However, Abram trusted God, believed His promises, and decided to follow Him wherever He called.

How do I respond?

Abram had dozens of reasons to not follow God - he was too old, too established, and too invested to uproot his life. Like Abram, God may be calling you into the unknown and you are flooded with reasons not to follow Him. Maybe you feel too young, inexperienced, or deficient. Maybe you think your sin is too strong, your past is too tainted, or your life is too marred to be used by God. Whatever your reason, God stands before you, graciously beckoning you to follow Him. His provision is more than enough to cover anything you might lack. His grace is more than enough to forgive anything you’ve ever done. Will you trust Him, believe His promises, and follow Him? As you begin this journey through Exodus, think through what is holding you back from following God fully. Pray that God would make you courageous to follow Him and faithful to trust His promises.
