In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2 NLT

Ready to learn a new language? Just kidding! Well, kind of. There’s a Hebrew phrase in the verses we just read that is pretty interesting. It’s Tohu va-Vohu. And it means, “formless and void; without form, empty.”

That’s how things start in the opening lines of the Bible, but that’s not how they stay. Because the Spirit of God was there, ready to get to work. And through the rest of the chapter, the Spirit first forms and then fills the world.

For the first three days, He brings shape and definition to space, sky, and land. Then this transition happens and for the next three days, God fills the spaces He has created. He fills the sky with stars, the sea with creatures, and the land with plants and animals. We watch God work form and fill the heavens and the earth.

Then, when God created human beings, He also formed and filled us. He formed Adam from the dust of the earth and filled him with His very own breath, and man became a living being.

See, from the very beginning, the Spirit of God has wanted to form you into His image and fill you with His presence.

How can you allow Him to form and fill you today? What does the idea of being formed mean to you? What does the idea of being filled mean to you? What might that look like?

As you work on your memory verse today using whatever method works best for you, think about it in the context of being formed and filled—created anew. How does that lens help these words come alive more?

When the Scriptures become more than words on a page to us, it is a sign of the work that God is doing in us. And that’s exciting!
