THE BREAD OF LIFE
READ
“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”—Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
REFLECT
The beauty of the life we live in Christ is that it depends on His Word. When Jesus says this, He’s in the wilderness facing Satan, who is preying on Jesus’ physical weakness. He’s been fasting for forty days and, instead of giving in to temptation, He shows us how to combat Satan’s schemes with truth. Jesus also demonstrates that while our hunger for physical food is valid, our deeper hunger can only be satisfied spiritually. It’s in Christ that we’re sustained! Jesus calls us to invest in eternity and put earthly needs in their proper place. What can you do to invest in your spiritual life?
PRAY
Father, what a gift Your Word is. You’ve also given me the gift of Your Spirit, leading me to understand what Your Word says and means. Instill deep within my soul a hunger and thirst for what I need spiritually. Make me desperate to hear Your still, small voice as I’m led according to Your Word. Remove any distractions or areas of weakness that hinder my commitment to You. Amen.
FOR THE FAMILY
DISCUSS
- What did Jesus mean that we should live on the words that come from the mouth of God?
- What is something you live off of that distracts you from living off of the Word of God?
PRAY
Father, what a gift Your Word is. Thank You for not leaving us alone without anything to learn more about You. Thank You also for giving us Your Holy Spirit, which helps us understand Your Word as we read it. I pray You help me to push aside whatever distractions keep me from going to Your Word. Amen.
