 <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1">John the Baptist Prepares the Way</div><div class="p">1The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,#1:1 Or Jesus Christ. Messiah (Hebrew) and Christ (Greek) both mean Anointed One. the Son of God,#1:1 Some manuscripts do not have the Son of God. 2as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;I will send my messenger ahead of you,</div><div class="q2">who will prepare your way&#8221;#1:2 Mal. 3:1&#8212;</div><div class="q1">3&#8220;a voice of one calling in the wilderness,</div><div class="q1">&#8216;Prepare the way for the Lord,</div><div class="q2">make straight paths for him.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#1:3 Isaiah 40:3</div><div class="m">4And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothing made of camel&#8217;s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his message: &#8220;After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I baptize you with#1:8 Or in water, but he will baptize you with#1:8 Or in the Holy Spirit.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Baptism and Testing of Jesus</div><div class="p">9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: &#8220;You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.&#8221;</div><div class="p">12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted#1:13 The Greek for tempted can also mean tested. by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Announces the Good News</div><div class="p">14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15&#8220;The time has come,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls His First Disciples</div><div class="p">16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17&#8220;Come, follow me,&#8221; Jesus said, &#8220;and I will send you out to fish for people.&#8221; 18At once they left their nets and followed him.</div><div class="p">19When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit</div><div class="p">21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24&#8220;What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are&#8212;the Holy One of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p">25 &#8220;Be quiet!&#8221; said Jesus sternly. &#8220;Come out of him!&#8221; 26The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.</div><div class="p">27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, &#8220;What is this? A new teaching&#8212;and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.&#8221; 28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals Many</div><div class="p">29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Simon&#8217;s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.</div><div class="p">32That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33The whole town gathered at the door, 34and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place</div><div class="p">35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37and when they found him, they exclaimed: &#8220;Everyone is looking for you!&#8221;</div><div class="p">38Jesus replied, &#8220;Let us go somewhere else&#8212;to the nearby villages&#8212;so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.&#8221; 39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy</div><div class="p">40A man with leprosy#1:40 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. came to him and begged him on his knees, &#8220;If you are willing, you can make me clean.&#8221;</div><div class="p">41Jesus was indignant.#1:41 Many manuscripts Jesus was filled with compassion He reached out his hand and touched the man. &#8220;I am willing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Be clean!&#8221; 42Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.</div><div class="p">43Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44&#8220;See that you don&#8217;t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.&#8221; 45Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.</div>

 <div class="label">41</div><div class="p">1In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king&#8217;s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there, 2Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land. 3Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian#41:3 Or Chaldean soldiers who were there.</div><div class="p">4The day after Gedaliah&#8217;s assassination, before anyone knew about it, 5eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, bringing grain offerings and incense with them to the house of the Lord. 6Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said, &#8220;Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.&#8221; 7When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern. 8But ten of them said to Ishmael, &#8220;Don&#8217;t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.&#8221; So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. 9Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made as part of his defense against Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.</div><div class="p">10Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah&#8212;the king&#8217;s daughters along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.</div><div class="p">11When Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool in Gibeon. 13When all the people Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.</div><div class="s1">Flight to Egypt</div><div class="p">16Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived, whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam&#8212;the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to Egypt 18to escape the Babylonians.#41:18 Or Chaldeans They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.</div>

 <div class="label">42</div><div class="p">1Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah#42:1 Hebrew; Septuagint (see also 43:2) Azariah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached 2Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, &#8220;Please hear our petition and pray to the Lord your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. 3Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4&#8220;I have heard you,&#8221; replied Jeremiah the prophet. &#8220;I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">5Then they said to Jeremiah, &#8220;May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. 6Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the Lord our God.&#8221;</div><div class="p">7Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest. 9He said to them, &#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition, says: 10&#8216;If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you. 11Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. 12I will show you compassion so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.&#8217;</div><div class="p">13&#8220;However, if you say, &#8216;We will not stay in this land,&#8217; and so disobey the Lord your God, 14and if you say, &#8216;No, we will go and live in Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the trumpet or be hungry for bread,&#8217; 15then hear the word of the Lord, you remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, 16then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die. 17Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague; not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.&#8217; 18This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;As my anger and wrath have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem, so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse#42:18 That is, your name will be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, others will see that you are cursed. and an object of horror, a curse#42:18 That is, your name will be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, others will see that you are cursed. and an object of reproach; you will never see this place again.&#8217;</div><div class="p">19&#8220;Remnant of Judah, the Lord has told you, &#8216;Do not go to Egypt.&#8217; Be sure of this: I warn you today 20that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said, &#8216;Pray to the Lord our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.&#8217; 21I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to tell you. 22So now, be sure of this: You will die by the sword, famine and plague in the place where you want to go to settle.&#8221;</div>
